It’s birthday time, Christmas, Father’s or Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day or you simply want to let the writer in your life know how much you care about them. But, what to get them?
The more original the gift, the better; especially when talking about writers. If we want to give a present to someone we care about, we want that person to be excited about it, we think about every detail, and we take into consideration their likes, hobbies and profession.
Buying a gift for a writer is not easy. Mr. Raven is the perfect example. He struggles every time he has to buy me a gift. I made this list so you can get ideas if you are trying to find a present for a writer, or if you are interested in treating yourself with one of these creative and beautiful gifts, but also hoping that Mr. Raven is curious enough to read it and surprise me with something from this list.
Some of the items that I included can be a writer’s better ally. Others are not even useful, but I thought of adding them to the list because they were clever and original.
Books for Writers
Every good writer is, first of all, a good reader. That’s why books are always a good option. However, I’m not talking about just any books, but those which will help the writer in your life be a better one.
If you want to know our tips on how to be a better writer check this post.
There are many books that motivate to write, teach narrative techniques, and help the novel writer take their first steps. Since there are lots of them, this topic needs to be covered in a different entry, but I’ll be just referring to three books that every writer should read at least once:
- “On Writing” by Stephen King
- “You are a Writer” by Jeff Goins
- “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg

Candles
Scented candles can go a long way to a writer’s heart, especially if we are talking about getting inspired to write and setting the perfect mood. But hear this out (actually, read)! There are some of those that can make your present memorable; candles inspired not only by books, but also by writers.
Author’s candles
Paddywax Library Collection offers soy wax candles designed to evoke the essence of the author for which it’s named. Sizes and prices vary from $9.00 to $28.99. You can find scents like Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and William Shakespeare.
Candles that Smell like Books
You can also buy the set of candles that Old Castle Candles offers, under the scent “The Library”. It includes 3 handmade, 4 oz candles, named “Antique Books”, “New Books” and “Ancient Scrolls” ($27.95), perfect for those that love the smell of books. You can buy any of the three or the complete set that comes with a discount.
Candles Inspired by Books
There are also candles based on our favorite books. And I cannot say how much that person is gonna love them. Buy them, The Shire if you want them to travel to the land of the Lord of the Ring. And last but not least, if they love The Hunger Games, try giving them this candle inspired by Katniss Everdeen.
Fountain Pens
Simple, classy and a right choice to get the very best of handwriting. Also, if the author in your life is like me and they have a graveyard of pens on their desk, search no more, you just found it! The solution to their problems is a fountain pen. I recommend Lamy’s fountain pen, it’s not as expensive as other brands and the quality is good, I selected two of them for this article, and you can see their prices on Amazon here.
Writers’ T-shirts
I think every writer would be glad to have a T-shirt with a nice design or a clever phrase that shows the world they are writers. These tees are funny and punny sometimes, and others, just simple and straightforward. And though everybody knows the writer’s uniform is messy hair, a cup of coffee and pajamas, they can definitely add this to their work uniform. You can find many designs on online shops like Guru Tees, but here are some that we’ve designed.
Add some motivation and encourage the writer in your life with a write on T-shirt.
What is a writer without coffee? Most of us can’t make our way through the day without a good cup of delicious coffee. This T-shirt is perfect for those coffeeholics.
Finally, everybody knows that writers enjoy making characters suffer, and killing them… I’m kidding, or not. So, give this T-shirt as a gift for the evil creature that lives inside the writer in your life.
Literary Jewelry
This would be a nice present for writers that like jewelry and want to get their love for literature to the next level.
Dictionary Necklace
Dictionaries and writers go hand in hand. Thus, this necklace with a dictionary excerpt can be a beautiful gift for them. You can even choose the word entry you want for the necklace, making the gift more special and personalized.
Quotation Mark earrings
They make a unique gift for writers; adorable and absolutely beautiful.
Pride and Prejudice bracelet
A lovely handmade bracelet featuring Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth, to carry Pride and Prejudice everywhere they go.
Noise – Canceling Headphones
Many writers crave for silence and peace, and that’s somehow difficult if they live with other people. Sometimes it’s not just having time to write, but muting the world around that keeps us from getting inspired and focused.
There are many options on Amazon. Bose offers very good ones, but a little bit pricey. However, there are other options, like Sony that are cheaper and the quality is still good.
Actually, while I’m writing this blog post, I could use one of them to stay focused on my writing instead of listening to the guy on the TV talking about ancient inventions. That’s on my Christmas letter; I hope Mr. Raven reads it.
Bookends
Most writers start being passionate readers and consequently, they end up having lots of books. Books they read, started but didn’t finish, or want to read in the future. I love to keep them organized, and there is no better way of doing so than using bookends. However, I’m not talking about regular bookends, but clever ones. With these bookends, you’ll add a bit of fantasy to their bookshelf.
Software for Writers
Grammarly
The writer in your life could surely use a leg up with a grammar checker like Grammarly or Hemingway. I’m sure you don’t want typos and grammar mistakes to get in their way to become bestselling authors.
Scrivener
Scrivener is an amazing app for writers. Although I’ve never used it before, I have friends that can’t seem to live without it. You can get it for $49, and there are discounts for NaNoWriMo participants (20%) and winners (50%). The software offers incredible tools that will make the creative process less demanding. Their Own Domain
Every author needs their own website. A platform that introduces them to the world, shows their books, and where their fans can see what their favorite author is working on.
An author website is a powerful marketing tool and a must for all authors. Perhaps your special person has always dreamed about having their own author website, but never had the time or the boost to actually start it. Buying their own domain will be the fuel to start making their writing public. You can find different offers in Hostgator. Click here for more details.
Hand Lettering Tools
Many writers love calligraphy and lettering, it’s not a general rule, but even if they don’t know about it or never tried it, odds are they’ll like it. I’ve been practicing lettering for some months now and it relaxes me and allows me to personalize my stuff; that’s why I decided to include it on the list.
If you want to introduce them to the amazing and artistic world of lettering and creative calligraphy, I recommend The Ultimate Guide to Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering for Beginners, an incredibly good book, for those starting lettering. Perhaps, you might also get them a set of brush pens… just saying.
Laptop Desk
We writers spend hours in front of a screen. If the writer in your life has a laptop, it’s pretty possible that they spend a considerable amount of time using it. However, it is difficult to write on a laptop if you’re on the bed or the sofa. There’s simply not a perfect position to do so comfortably. So, if you care about them, this gift will show it. Their neck will appreciate it.
Journals, Notebooks and Notepads
The Novel Notebook
A useful and beautiful planner for writers, with writing prompts that’ll help the writer in your life overcome writer’s block.
Writer’s Journal
A journal designed especially for writers that will help them keep all their notes in the same place. It includes outlining pages and questions to help the writer get started planning their story.
Leather journal
If you want to outstand, a rustic leather journal is one of the best options. It will give the writer in your life the feeling of having something unique and valuable, and most importantly, it smells like leather.
A notepad with their favorite author
There are many of them, but you can find these on Etsy, with cute drawings of authors like Poe, Lovecraft and Kafka.
Creative mugs
Whether you like coffee, or tea, or none of them, mugs for writers are the best (oops, did that rhyme?). I sometimes even use it to keep my pens and pencils organized. You can buy a mug with an inspirational quote, or featuring a part of their favorite book. You can even find one with a clever or funny phrase on it.
Story Teller mug (personalized)
These will help any writer get inspired and put fingers to keyboard, speaking of which…
We’ve all fantasized with the idea of having our own typewriter, so this will be one of the best and most creative gifts you can give to the writer in your life. A Typewriter Keyboard is an incredible way to get a typewriter-like experience in this digital era.
Personalized stamps
These stamps crafted by Ex Libris can be personalized with the name of the writer in your life. It can be used to mark their books, notebooks, or pretty much everything they want to put their name on. They’ll just love it, trust me. You can find it on Etsy and although there are different designs, this was my favorite.
Coffee Thermos
You’ll always see a writer with a mug when they’re writing, it’s called the mystery of the hot beverage. Be it coffee, tea, or whatever the rest of writers drink (let me know in the comments); every writer has that favorite drink that boosts their productivity. In my case is coffee and it happens to me, more often than not, that I make my coffee and I end up drinking it when it’s cold. That’s why coffee thermos can make a nice present. Check these that I found on Etsy. They’re just adorable.
Nothing
I didn’t know that “nothing” could be sold, but I can’t stop finding the oddest things on the Internet. Apparently you can buy this gift for people who already have almost everything. What they lack of? Yep, you got it! Nothing. So, for a very low price you can buy nothing for someone. This is not exactly related to writers, but I thought a writer may find it funny. The seller states in the description that in case of finding or experiencing something when opened, you can return it for full refund (I can’t find a flaw in his logic).
Writer’s Block
Well… there’s not much to say in this one, but that it’s funny and clever. It’s literally a block. You can personalize the other sides of the block with quotes, images, or phrases to help the writer in your life overcome their writer’s block.
Check this article if you want to know how to beat writer’s block like a pro.
Shakespearean Insult Gum
In every set there are seven little boxes with a pair of gums of different flavors and Shakespearean insults. Perfect for those who want to refresh their breath with a bit more style. A gag gift if you ask me.
Summing up…
